Programme Structure

Two-phase mastery programme covering both components of the PLAB examination

Phase 1 — PLAB MLA AKT Launches Sat 1 August 2026

Applied Knowledge Test Preparation

Comprehensive AKT preparation mapped to the September 2026 MLA syllabus.

Core PLAB MLA App — Topic-by-topic micro-modules mapped to the MLA Sept 2026 syllabus. Each module includes: learning objectives, summary text with tables and flowcharts, sample questions at the new clinical reasoning standard, and end-of-topic takeaways. The app maps your coverage and individual performance to direct focused learning.
Virtual Learning Tutorials — 8 live sessions, 3 hours each, covering the clinical reasoning and knowledge components of high-yield micro-modules.
Two Mock AKT Exam Papers — Full-length mock examinations delivered through the Core App, simulating the 2026 vignette format under timed conditions.
Phase 2 — PLAB MLA CPSA Launches Mon 16 Nov or Mon 23 Nov 2026

Clinical and Professional Skills Assessment Preparation

Structured CPSA preparation combining digital resources with intensive face-to-face skills training.

Core PLAB MLA App — CPSA Module — Clinical station exemplars, actor script types, example mark schemes, and links to essential external resources (e.g. UK Safeguarding guidance, Adult Resuscitation Guidelines).
Five-Day Intensive Face-to-Face Course — Small tutor-to-student groups (1 tutor : 8 students) maximising individualised consultation feedback. Covers CPSA consultation skills and practical skill procedures. Conducted in the UK, with potential overseas delivery subject to demand. Delegate places limited to optimise educational experience.
This programme will be periodically updated as preparations approach. New and additional resources will be made available on this website.

What Is Changing in September 2026?

The GMC's updated MLA Content Map introduces a fundamentally different examination standard

FeatureOld PLAB (Pre-2026)New PLAB MLA 2026+
Syllabus~311 core conditions; factual recall focus430+ core conditions; genomics, transgender health, palliative care, safety-critical pathways
QuestionsShort single-sentence stems; direct recallLong clinical vignettes; Assessment → Investigation → Management; synthesis & data filtering
ComplexityDisease-to-drug link; memory-basedHigh-level clinical reasoning; next critical step; UK medical school finals standard
DistractorsClearly wrong answers; simple selectionMultiple 'correct' options; BEST / NEXT APPROPRIATE step; patient safety focus
What this means: The new PLAB 2026+ examination requires clinical reasoning at UK medical school finals level. Simple factual recall is no longer sufficient. MD Acumen's PLAB MLA Mastery programme is comprehensively aligned to the updated 2026 MLA Content Map.

The Six Domains of the MLA Content Map

The MLA Content Map is organised into six interconnected domains

1

Areas of Clinical Practice

24 clinical areas from acute & emergency to surgery, spanning all specialties encountered in the UK Foundation Programme.

2

Areas of Professional Knowledge

Scientific, ethical, and social foundations underpinning clinical decision-making. Includes genetics & genomics, pharmacology, ethics & law.

3

Clinical & Professional Capabilities

Skills, behaviours, and attributes for safe, effective, compassionate care. History, investigation, management, communication, prescribing.

4

Practical Skills & Procedures

Hands-on competencies for safe practice. Aligned to GMC Outcomes for Graduates. Particularly relevant to the CPSA.

5

Patient Presentations

220+ signs, symptoms, and investigation findings commonly encountered in the UK Foundation Programme.

6

Conditions

430+ pathophysiological diseases and clinical diagnoses — core conditions from common to rare but critical. Categorised by body system.

Anatomy of a 2026 PLAB MLA Clinical Vignette

Understanding how the new clinical vignettes are structured — and what each component tests

1

👤 Patient Demographics

Sets the baseline risk profile — age, gender, ethnicity, occupation. Primes differential diagnosis from the outset.

2

🚨 Presenting Complaint

The clinical 'hook' — chief symptom, onset, duration, severity. Directs the candidate's initial clinical reasoning.

3

📋 Clinical History

Past medical history, drug history, social history, family history. Layered complexity requiring synthesis.

4

🌡️ Physical Findings

Vital signs (ABCDE approach), targeted examination results. Tests pattern recognition and red flag identification.

5

🧪 Investigations

Bedside tests (ECG, urinalysis), blood results, imaging (CXR, CT). Requires interpretation in clinical context, not isolation.

6

The Lead-in Question

The specific clinical task — 'What is the most appropriate next investigation?', 'What is the next best management step?', 'What is the most likely complication?' Tests prioritisation and patient safety.
