Undergraduate ECTS elective · 2026–27

European Health Policy and the Prevention of Cardiometabolic Multiple Long-Term Conditions

A blended intensive elective on European health policy and the prevention of cardiometabolic multiple long-term conditions — the overlapping spectrum of heart failure, atrial fibrillation, chronic kidney disease, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, hypercholesterolaemia, obesity as it relates to cardiovascular disease, and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease. Alternative labels in current use include CKM, CVKM, CVRM, CKLM and DCRM.

The course combines European Union health policy with current clinical practice, AI-enabled risk assessment and precision prevention; lifestyle and behaviour change runs through all four themes.

We will teach this elective in Georgia in November 2026 and, on proposed dates, in March–April 2027. Each delivery has four thematic units taught by live webinar, followed by one on-campus week.

Learning outcomes

✓Analyse how European Union legislation and policy on health, data and artificial intelligence shape the prevention, detection and management of cardiometabolic multiple long-term conditions.
✓Identify the causes of late detection and unequal outcomes, and propose equity-focused remedies.
✓Apply guideline-directed assessment and management, combining pharmacotherapy with lifestyle and behaviour change, in a primary care context.
✓Evaluate AI-enabled risk tools (risk calculators, digital phenotyping, wearables, multifactorial risk scoring) against European regulatory and data-governance requirements.
✓Construct and defend an original, policy-informed case analysis, declaring any use of AI tools.

Course structure

Four units, one integration week

AI and digital health policy for cardiometabolic risk stratification

Unit 1 · online week. Tuesday lecture on European policy; Saturday case-based session with a 30-minute policy-to-practice segment, followed by a self-assessment quiz with worked answers (not graded). The online mid-term examination follows on the Sunday of the fourth week.

2

Heart failure and chronic kidney disease

Unit 2 · online week. Tuesday lecture on European policy; Saturday case-based session with a 30-minute policy-to-practice segment, followed by a self-assessment quiz with worked answers (not graded). The online mid-term examination follows on the Sunday of the fourth week.

3

Hypertension and lipid management

Unit 3 · online week. Tuesday lecture on European policy; Saturday case-based session with a 30-minute policy-to-practice segment, followed by a self-assessment quiz with worked answers (not graded). The online mid-term examination follows on the Sunday of the fourth week.

4

Type 2 diabetes and obesity

Unit 4 · online week. Tuesday lecture on European policy; Saturday case-based session with a 30-minute policy-to-practice segment, followed by a self-assessment quiz with worked answers (not graded). The online mid-term examination follows on the Sunday of the fourth week.

5

Integration and the capstone project

On-campus week · Georgia. One theme per day in the order of Units 1–4; the written capstone project due on the Wednesday; the capstone policy lecture and the oral presentation on the final afternoon.

Teaching methods: interactive lectures (live online and on campus), case-based seminars or working groups, flipped-classroom preparation, case-based clinical reasoning in small groups, and guided independent study. Clinical training is case-based, without patient contact.
Assessment

Methods of assessment — the same structure in every delivery

Two summative assessments in every elective, credit value and term: a 60-point mid-term examination at the end of the four webinar weeks, and the 40-point capstone project, submitted in writing and presented orally in the on-campus week. Weekly self-assessment quizzes support learning and are not graded.

ComponentWhat it involvesWeighting
Mid-term examination (summative)Single-best-answer multiple-choice questions covering Weeks 1–4, sat online, on the secure learning platform (or the university’s Canvas or Moodle, to be confirmed) on the Sunday after the fourth week of webinars, at 18:00 UK time. At least 11 points are needed to sit the final assessment.60 points
Capstone project (summative)An individual, policy-informed analysis of a clinical case, allocated from an anonymised case bank or, where available, an anonymised case from the student’s own clinical experience, benchmarked against a stated European objective (2,000 words; 5–10 references in Vancouver style; up to 4 tables and 4 figures). The written project is submitted on the learning platform by 12:00 on the Wednesday of the on-campus week (25 points) and presented to a faculty panel on the final afternoon — a 5-minute presentation followed by questions (15 points).40 points
Formative self-assessment (not graded)At the end of each webinar week: 10 multiple-choice questions (WHEEL) or 15 (Cardiometabolic), with worked answers, for practice. Separate from the mid-term examination and the capstone project.—
To pass: at least 51 of 100 points overall; at least 11 of 60 in the mid-term examination to sit the final assessment; and the host university’s minimum for the capstone project (20 or 24 of 40 points). AI tools may be used, but every use must be declared in writing; the oral presentation tests the student’s own reasoning.
